The flower of life
This functional art installation was designed by our friends at 2nd Globe Studios (www.2ndglobe.com). The structures design was based on an ancient math equation that forms these repeating patterns dubbed "The Flower of Life". The piece had to serve a few different functions; first being a beautiful piece of art. This sculpture would be the focal point of a large rooftop garden at the new IU Cancer Research hospital in downtown Indianapolis. Second the sculpture also had to be a safe, functional and comfortable seating structure for people to enjoy. And lastly it is actually covering an oversized access door that is used when installing and removing the large medical equipment inside the hospital (think MRI machine big!) so the entire piece had to be made from smaller sections that could be easily disassembles when needed!
