Doritos - treasure chest

When we were first approached by the Frito Lays marketing team the project seemed pretty simple; design and build a treasure chest for an upcoming television promotion. We were thinking a TV prop right? Well it gets a little more complex. Did you know the word "Dorito" actually means “golden triangle”? No? Neither did we, but as soon as we found that out is was obvious our treasure chest was going to need to be a triangle. The box needed to be heavy ( made of billet Aluminum), to look and feel the part of an ancient treasure; but not too heavy as this was going to travel around the country doing promotional events leading up to the big reveal. And then things started to get interesting….. The more we got into it the more everyone started getting excited about the possibilities of just how cool this could be. So we added lights, motors, actuators, doors that open and close when you press giant jeweled buttons, remote controls Yes it is easy to get carried away.
The end result was an amazingly detailed piece that was the star of the show. It has been from Indy to Texas to Los Angeles to its final destination in Las Vegas. The winner of the competition walked away with $100,000.00!
